About this event

The Japan Tourism Agency records the Yamaga Lantern Festival on 15 and 16 August, commemorating the torches villagers brought to guide Emperor Keiko along the Kikuchi River. Washi paper lanterns, built with no wood or metal, are offered at Omiya Shrine in the Agari Toro ceremony, fireworks rise over the river on the first night, and the festival peaks with the Sennin Toro Odori, the thousand-lantern dance.
