One of Japan's three great boat festivals: shrine mikoshi sail Matsushima Bay with a fleet of about 100 boats, with fireworks on the eve.

About this event
The MLIT Tohoku cruise festival listing gives the pattern as eve fireworks on the second Sunday of July and the main festival on the third Monday of July, Marine Day, which in 2027 falls on 18 and 19 July. The Japan Tourism Agency notes the mikoshi of Shiogama Jinja and Shiwahiko Jinja are loaded onto dragon and phoenix boats for the bay procession, and about 8,000 fireworks are launched on the eve.
