About this event

The Baikasai is held every year on 25 February, the anniversary of the death of Sugawara no Michizane, and has a history of about 900 years. Geiko and maiko from the Kamishichiken district serve tea at the outdoor nodate ceremony in the shrine's plum garden, where about 1,500 plum trees of some 50 varieties bloom. The date is fixed by tradition; the shrine lists it in its annual events.
