About this event

From 20:00 on 16 August each year, fires are lit in sequence on five mountains to send off the spirits of ancestors at the end of Obon, beginning with the large character on Mt Nyoigatake. The organiser, the Kyoto Gozan Okuribi federation, publishes the fixed date; the fires burn for about 30 minutes each and are watched from across the city, including the Kamogawa riverbanks.
